Liverpool are due a rebuild with many players in the squad coming to the latter stages of their careers and now a new update has emerged on another potential transfer target that could spark a youth revolution at Anfield.
What’s the latest?
According to Gazzetta Dello Sport (via Sport Witness), Liverpool are interested in signing Atalanta wonderkid Giorgio Scalvini.
As per the report, the Merseysiders join Inter Milan, Bayern Munich and Manchester City in their interest for the player who has been valued at €40m (£34.4m) by his current club.
Klopp’s next Fabinho
It is no secret that Jurgen Klopp and the powers at Anfield are on an ambitious recruitment drive to rebuild the midfield personnel with many of the current players who occupy spots in the centre of the pitch either coming to the end of their contracts or reaching the latter stages of their careers.
However, the club could also add to their defensive options with Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip both 31 years old at this point, so it would be advantageous to invest in youthful players who can ultimately complete a seamless transition into the first team just like Ibrahima Konate.
With deals being pushed for Jude Bellingham and Enzo Fernandez, Klopp could complete the holy trinity of his youth revolution in the heart of his team by signing Scalvini – who has also gained some experience in playing the defensive midfield role over four appearances in his Italian side this season.
The 19-year-old – who was hailed a “top talent” by Fabrizio Romano – ranks in the top 3% of his positional peers across the top five European leagues for non-penalty goals, shots on goal, touches, progressive passes received, tackles and touches.
Over 11 Serie A appearances this season, Scalvini has scored one goal and won 50% of his duels combined, as well as averaging 1.1 interceptions, 1.7 tackles and 1.2 clearances per game.
If the talented teenager did make a move to Merseyside he could follow a similar career path to Liverpool ace Fabinho who started out his career as a full-back but ultimately developed into a midfielder over time owing to his more attacking-minded approach to the game, an approach that Scalvini’s strengths display.
Klopp is a manager who likes his team to offer versatility and the ability to affect play no matter where they are on the pitch especially with the high-line the Liverpool boss champions when setting up his team, so Scalvini’s attacking threat from his deeper role would be warmly welcomed at Anfield.
With that being said, it would be interesting to see how Klopp would shape Scalvini from the unpolished diamond that is excelling at Atalanta into a Liverpool player of the future.
